At a distance of only ten kilometres from Volterra, fifteen from San Gimignano, twenty from Montaione and from the nearby located Castelfalfi golf-course the farm complex of Vicarello di Volterra enjoys a priviledged position finding itself at the centre of a triangle which unites Pisa, Florence and Siena, and the centres on the Tirrenian coast. Vicarello di Volterra was founded in the late-medieval period and among the various papers and documents in the possession of the Olivetan Monastery of Saint Andrew of Volterra are to be found the records regarding the firms and lands which formed the ancient Vicarello farm. From the year 1422 the Vicarello estate was transformed into a monastery and as such remained until 1784 when it was suppressed by the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Pietro Leopoldo’ and the whole of the property was purchased by the “Incontri”, a noble family of Volterra. At the beginning of the 20th. century the huge fortune of the estate was squandered through disastrous financial operations made by the descendants of the Incontri family and consequently the farm was abandoned for decades. The project involved the recovery of the whole complex made up of the villa itself and of the six annexed buildings covering a total of 11,350 square metres and also the reorganization of the outdoor areas. To be specific two new swimming-pools with their related areas have been constructed and the access both by pedestrians or with vehicles has been completely re-planned making for the restitution of the historical viewpoint marked by tall cypress trees. A large parking-area has also been introduced particularly taking into consideration its situation in the environmental context. Furthermore private gardens have been created for the residences and the main piazza with its view of Volterra has been redesigned. The recovery and philological restoration of the complex has been carried out through the conjugation of the current balance between the new usage from the point of view of the distribution of areas and of the installations together with the employment of the requisities which guarantee the maximum respect for the local traditions regarding the use of materials, the final touches and the methods of construction typical of the locality. The project has been finalized with the intention of creating a residential complex consisting of fifty-five apartments in addition to communal areas, offices for the administration of the site, a restaurant and a wellness-centre of 500 square metres with a covered swimming-pool, a spa area and a gymnasium extracted from the former cellars. The articulation and individual characteristics of each building, the respect for the environment and the landscape, the limits determinated by the structure of the land and of the pre-existing elements have all required consideration and attention together with a strong sense of commitment; the result has been the creation o an environment possessing the highest levels of modern living without abandoning the typical charm characteristic of Tuscan farm-estates of the nineteenth century.
