Among the most prestigious edifices of Certaldo Alto together with the birthplace of Giovanni Boccaccio, the Palazzo Pretorio and buildings of religious significance one also finds the Palazzo Stiozzi Ridolfi de Peverelli. The castle possesses all of the architectural elements typical of military architecture of the 13th. century (towers, passages of communication and massive wall) together with the appearance of a nobleman’s residence. During the last century the latter function has conditioned many of the architectural aspects of the complex both regarding the architecture and the distribution of the internal spaces. The agricultural character of the area has also been emphasized. The project for the recovery and the restoration of the palace has been inserted in the variant of the PRG, with a stipulated agreement between the owner and the municipal authorities. The professional commission regards the finalization of a project for the re-use of the whole complex with a series of units for inhabitations. This proposition is connected with the larger project for the recovery of Certaldo Alto with the creation of pedestrian walks and the access of the public to prestigious areas and edifices. Equally all aspects concerning the restoration of monumental details (walls, towers, the chapel, etc.) have been confronted and the relative formalities have been made in agreement with the Soprintendenza ai Beni Ambientali e Architettonici di Firenze (Board of control of the Environmental and Archtectural Heritage of Florence).
