The Salviati family, owners since 1579, ordered the execution of the works which gave the façade facing via Ricasoli its present appearance. Various theories have been proposed concerning the supposed paternity of the edifice and the names of Buontalenti and Ammannati have often been suggested. Nevertheless it is certain that some modifications to the edifice are of a later date and are probably attributable to the architect Gherardo Silvani (1579-1675). From 1650 the palace became the property of the Gerini family: the family had already taken measures from the end of the 18th. century for several embellishments in the interiors, namely the renovation of the large hall in the noble quarters and the new flight of stairs designed by the architect Gasparre Paoletti. The commission has included the planning and execution of the project, the directing of the works of reconstruction and restoration, the co-ordination of the technical and structural projects and the installations. Assistance has also been supplied for the technical and administrative tests and accountancing. The studio has been requested to co-ordinate the important and extensive restoration of the whole palace, at present these works are still in progress. These comprise the total survey of the property, the recovery of decorative details and the reconstruction of the rooms for the purpose of various activities concerning the management of the site. The interventions for the restoration of various decorative details have required particular attention concerning the huge wealth of stucchi, the decorated fixtures both in the interiors and on the exteriors, on the frescoes on the façades and of those details in pietra forte and pietra serena stone, everything in close collaboration with the Soprintendenza. The integration of elements of the fixed furnishings have called for the procuring of textiles, woods and marbles compatible with those historically present in the palace. On completion of the works various institutions are to be found in the palace including the Legal Department of the Region of Tuscany, the seat of the Artigiancassa, the Administrative Tribunal of the Region of Tuscany, areas for delegations and congresses in addition to several residences. Offices, rooms for consultation by the public and archives have also been created.
